  • Advance dated e-tickets for entry are recommended for all Nature Reserve admissions (including free e-tickets for Members).
  • Hours may be modified, limited in capacity, and subject to availability or closure.
  • Check or social media for any weather closures. If the Nature Reserve closes due to weather, guests with tickets for that date may use their tickets for admission on another valid date.
  • Service dogs only. We love our pets, but they are not allowed at the Nature Reserve.
  • No smoking, including electronic cigarettes.
  • Leave what you find. No collecting of any kind.
  • Bicycles are permitted on roads only. 
  • No weapons, fires, alcoholic beverages, hunting, fishing, grilling, or swimming. 

Visitor Guidelines  

Narrated wagon tours are available in the spring (April-May) and fall (September-October) at Shaw Nature Reserve on Tuesdays and Wednesdays starting at 11 a.m. Wagon tours are $5 per person, free for members at the Friends and Family level and above or with a Bonus Bloom pass. Guests can reserve wagon passes at the Visitor Center. Tours last 30 to 45 minutes and follow the Nature Reserve's Loop Roads. Private wagon tours are also available, please call for more information (314)577-9555.

E-tickets recommended.

E-tickets are available up to one week in advance for purchase.  Access to the Nature Reserve will be limited by date-specific e-tickets. Guests are encouraged to try and limit visits to 3 hours when possible to help us adhere to our social distancing plan.

Know before you go

The Nature Reserve is a tobacco-free environment. Pets, weapons, collecting natural materials, and swimming are not permitted. Services dogs are welcome. Visitors must adhere to posted guidelines and closing time. Thank you, in advance, for your cooperation.

A limited number of picnic tables are available at the Glassberg Pavilions and Maritz Trail House. Tables must remain in the current location and should not be moved by visitors. Visitors should wash their hands and use hand sanitizer before and after using the picnic areas. Please take all trash and recycling. The Visitor Center picnic tables are not available at this time.

Restrooms are available near the Visitor Center, Glassberg Pavilions, and at the Maritz Trail House. Restrooms will have every other toilet/lavatory closed and limited capacity to maintain social distancing. Restrooms will be monitored hourly and disinfected based on CDC guidelines.

Health and Safety

The health and safety of staff and visitors is the primary concern for Shaw Nature Reserve.

Under guidance from the CDC and local health departments, we are reopening while still taking into account social distancing and the following precautions below.  An inherent risk of exposure to COVID-19 exists in any place where people are present.

Please read through our new safety and procedure guidelines to help keep you and our staff healthy.

There are 17 miles of hiking trails, and with the help of the trail map, a visitor can choose a short stroll or hikes of several miles.

Health and Safety

Trash cans will be limited to the area near the Temporary Visitor Center in outdoor dining area only. No sorting of trash. Please take all refuse out with you when you leave.

Increased frequency and intensity of cleaning and disinfecting all high-touch surfaces (such as handrails, signage, seats, and benches) following CDC and EPA guidelines. Hours of operation have been reduced to include nightly and weekly deep cleaning.

Please follow appropriate social distancing restrictions of six feet or more from anyone not in your traveling party.

Additional hand sanitizing stations will be placed throughout the Garden, including all point-of-sale locations and strategically around Garden grounds.

Visitors displaying any of the following symptoms before visiting should stay home, including coughing, shortness of breath/difficulty breathing, fever, chills, muscle pain, sore throat, new loss of taste or smell. Refunds and exchanges during this period will be honored without penalty.

Sick visitors

All staff working on Garden grounds will be screened prior to each shift. Employees will be required to complete a health screening questionnaire followed by a temperature check prior to the start of each shift. Only those staff who pass both the health screening questionnaire and temperature check will be allowed to enter the Garden and report for work.
